1912, Piltdown Man announced
A number of people have asked why I would include this in my calendar. Isn’t this an example of how fallible scientists are, and how tenuous the proof for evolution is?
I don’t see it that way. But then, I’ve read a lot about this subject, which certainly helps.
I see it this way: science corrected itself, and there was always a significant amount of doubt about what the Piltdown meant, about how it fit in to what was known. I think this is a good example of how science works. Mistakes were made, a fraud was perpetrated, but everything seems to have worked out in the end.
